The Bekabad Port of Entry (POE) is located south of Jalal-Abad city at the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border and is one of the major agricultural checkpoints along the Kyrgyz border. It handles about 3,500 people every day. A minimum of 50 light vehicles and 90 commercial trucks pass through the port daily.
A United States Government program entitled Export Control and Related Border Security Assistance (EXBS) financed the refurbishment of the Bekabad POE, and IOM Kyrgyzstan implemented the project. IOM Kyrgyzstan refurbished the POE with state-of-the-art facilities that comply with international standards for passenger and vehicle inspection.
Since the Bekabad POE is a major agricultural crossing, IOM installed a Vehicle Chemical Dip Tank –taking into consideration the environmental impact on the surrounding area. This tank has the capability to control overflow without fear of contaminating the surrounding area. This is the first agricultural project EXBS and IOM have supported. Using this dip tank will lessen the possibility of transmitting agricultural diseases, such as hoof-and-mouth and tapeworm, as well as spoors and insect contamination across the border. An agricultural inspection station with offices and a quarantine station were also built. |
